A Game Within the Game: The Skinny on Buzztime Player Reward Cards

A little over a year ago, we were trying to figure out a way to make Buzztime games even more exciting for our players when a brilliant idea surfaced... Player Reward Cards. Actually, the idea was initially called "Buzztime Bingo", but like any other stroke of genius, it kept building on itself and, what was supposed to be a simple one-time promotion, became a permanent part of the Buzztime experience. (And we've been patting ourselves on the backs ever since!)
For those of you unfamiliar with Player Rewards Cards, they are a game within the game that, quite simply, challenges you to play a specific series of Buzztime Games in order to win prizes, earn points, and beat other players to the punch. Every registered Buzztime player has these cards as part of their account and all players have the exact same series of games to play during the promotion period. The also have an equal number of passes that allow them to skip over any games they choose. The more cards you complete, the better your chances to win... and the bigger the prizes. Case in point: In January and February, players had a series of 8 cards to play in our Winter Whirlwind promotion. In March -- and in honor of our March Mash Up promotion -- we had them play 4 cards specific to the games that were highlighted throughout the month. In the end, players who completed cards were put into a drawing to win everything from t-shirts and water bottles to gift cards and iPod touches... not too shabby, huh? Here's how it works: Any time a player logs in with their Username and Password on the Playmaker, we track what games they play. If they happen to play games on their current Player Reward Card, they get that game checked off... no muss, no fuss! There are a few rules, the biggest being that you can't jump ahead, so you have to play the cards -- and games -- in order. You can't share passes or bribe the moderators to give you more, and you can't carry them over to the next quarter. Each quarter we are having more and more players participate in the program with the latest numbers showing around 70,000 cards completed in the first quarter of 2010. We get it... you love them.. and we love that you love them! For those of you who haven't been bitten by the PRC bug, there's always this quarter's Spring Fling card series.
