For those who don’t know: Anna Kournikova was a young Tennis player that was very good but quickly became famous for literally how attractive she was. She was on the cover of magazines and touted as the next superstar. She has yet to win a single major tournament. Actually, I’m not sure she has won a single tournament as a professional. See the connection? Is it coincidence or fate that Ace-King and Anna Kournikova have the same initials? Doesn’t matter. The point is they both look great and they both lose way more than their reputations and talent suggest. Thus, the nickname has stuck. You can even buy Anna Kournikova poker merchandise. Although I don’t suggest buying any of that merchandise unless you are not superstitious in ANY way. A poker player that is not superstitious is oxymoronic though, no? Moving on. We all have our favorite hands that we like to play no matter what our position is at the table or how many chips we have (9-10 Baby!). However, and this might be temporary, but for the foreseeable future I am retiring Ace-King. It is the first hand I will officially refuse to play. I don’t care if I’m on the button or if I’m the big blind. I’m done. I can’t play it anymore. It hurts too much. I am by no means suggesting that you do the same, but there are only so many times I can stand having Ace-King (Diamonds) to start and then losing to a pair of Tens, Jack-Seven Straight or a Club flush. For those of you who are not fed up with Anna Kournikova and would still like to play that hand, after all it IS a great hand, then I would go here and here for details on how to play it effectively. I wish you the best of luck and I hope you don’t suffer as many bad beats at the hands of Anna Kournikova as I have. Every Wednesday this month at 7:00 pm (local time) we’re having our Hump Day Hold ‘Em Tournament. I hope that the cards treat you kindly, but you have officially been warned about Ace-King. You can thank me later. Are there any cards you hate to play? Favorite hands? Comments (0) Share this page! |
